How to source products from China. (this is a guide only, please do your own reseach)

Find a supplier of the products that you want to import.

Its quite easy to find a product and supplier these days and the biggest marketplace is Alibaba.com where you can find pretty much anything. Alibaba has 3 different sites though which many people don’t know. They are aliexpress, alibaba.com and alibaba wholesale. The names are self explanatory, aliexpress deals with small quantities, where alibaba.com is more for B2B customers and alibaba wholesale is for large wholesale quantities.

Choose a supplier and order samples

Its a common procedure that before buying something in large quantities one may want to look at the actual product first. Most of these suppliers can send samples via airfreight at a small cost so you may receive the samples in a matter of days. Alibaba also provides trade assurance that means if your final order doesn’t meet the standards of the samples sent to you then the supplier will have to fix the problem by sending you a refund or replacement or a discount. Theres also an escrow kind of payment method called Alipay, where the supplier only gets paid after you confirm the actual product are recieved.

Finalise order with your supplier

Once you finalise your order with your supplier, they will do most of the work for you, including labelling and packing your order into a shipping container and delivering that container to the nearest port. In shipping terms this is called FOB(free on board). They will also issue the relevant documents including the commercial invoice, packing list, packing declaration and certificate of origin. The bill of lading will be issued by by shipping line or the agent. (See examples of these documents below.)

Clearance and delivery

Once the ship docks, then theres only a few days time to act and do the necessary paperwork and clear the freight of the customs and quarantine. There a high demurrage charges if this is not done within the prescribed times. With the required paperwork these complicated process becomes a breeze. Bill of lading

This is issued by the shipper or the sender to the shipping line acknowledging the receipt of the goods.

Packing List

This is a document that details the list of all the contents, also issued by the shipper.

Commercial Invoice

This is a customs document issued by the cooperation or person that is exporting goods over international borders.

Certificate of origin.

A document attesting that goods in a particular shipment are of a certain origin under the definitions of a particular bilateral or multilateral free trade agreement (FTA).

Arrival Notice

Sent by carrier to consignee or notify party to inform about the arrival of the shipment and number of packages, description of goods, their weight. Also called notice of arrival.

Packing declaration.

A letter that tells Australian Customs and the Australian Quarantine & Inspection Service (AQIS) the type of packing material that is used in your goods.
